Winston WT 9' 6wt
The Winston WT 9' 6wt fly rod is one of those models that does everything you desire in a trout rod. Everything for large streams with big trout that is. It's a versatile fly rod that can handle large dry flies, double nymph rigs, and streamers. And, it has the power to turn a big Feller in strong currents during a fight and to the net...worthy of one of those "oh my gosh" photos.
Zebra, maple, and elder wood spacers seemed to have dominated most reel seats on Winston WT fly rods built during their production run. My WT 690 fly rod has the less common walnut spacer that is stunning to see, especially with a premium fly reel locked into it. Yeah, this rod caught my eye many years ago because of that walnut reel seat. I thought it was a beauty then, and I still do.
I haven't fished this rod since Abe's at the San Juan River closed six years ago. I miss those days of fun on the Juan, with big trout tugging the line on my WT 6wt rod. Some good news, though. Abe's is getting renovated this year, re-opening, and I'm looking forward to getting reacquainted with my old haunts for more adventure and stories. You know what rod is going with me...
