Bauer's Star Drag
One of my favorite innovations from John Bauer is his star drag knob on the front side of his reels. It’s a creative enhancement to his sealed disc drags that are ever so smooth. I cast with my right hand, so yeah, I do like the feature of being able to adjust the drag without changing hands on the fly rod. It's an easy drag set with a finger pull on the star. And it just works for me.
Anyone who scans through my blog will see examples of a Bauer SST, or Mackenzie reel with a star drag locked into one of my fly rods. The reels are light, handsome looking, and are very functional with regard to making intuitive drag adjustments while maintaining your grip on the rod.
Bauer currently doesn't offer a reel with the star drag, but I haven't given up hope they may do so in the future. It's been such a unique design and legacy feature to represent Bauer's innovations, it would be shame not to bring it back into their product offering.
