A Comeback
I've been reading from various sources that Abe's Motel and Fly Shop has been sold to new owners who have plans to restore it..for opening as quickly as they can. This is great news! I was never able to enjoy fishing on the San Juan after Abe's closed, even though fishing can be amazing there at times.
Nope, the fishing trips on the Juan just wasn't the same without the fly shop guides' stories and chatter about which trout fly is "hot" at the moment. The place had an atmosphere that only spoke fishing, and the stories between shop employees and anglers coming off the river was deliriously fun!
The rooms had a throwback ambiance from a sixties western culture that kept the adventures down to basics, and focused on what everyone came to do...to catch a big one! It didn't matter if it was a rainbow or brown trout looking up from the bottom of the net, as long as it was big, fat, and mean. Everyone was looking for that 20 inch plus monster of a trout to "make" their day.
I've shied away from going to the Juan since Abe's locked the doors. The room prices from other rentals in the area went through the roof without Abe's competition. However, I may be booking rooms again to fish the Juan when Abe's reopens for business. Depending on their room prices that is.
