Something Is Wrong
Neal and I were fishing home waters on Thursday, and while we enjoyed the day in the outdoors, the fishing was disappointing. It's beginning to look like deja vu all over again. Last year was a poor year for fishing on Rainy Mountain, and it is beginning to look like it could be even worse this year on some select trout streams. The trout populations on these streams are not what they were even three years ago. Not at this time anyway.
We were able to get three trout into the net. That's it. Three small wild browns. This would be okay if it happened only ever so often. However, three trout is an outstanding day compared to most days up on the mountain this year. It wasn't just us. An angler who was parked next to us said he only caught three small trout as well. He was an experienced fly fishing guy, and yet he was shaking his head in disbelief as he was getting into his truck to leave.
I mentioned earlier this year that I was planning on changing up my usual stream rotation this year, and today reinforces why. I was in a rut anyway, and need to get back to some of those amazing trout streams I frequented in the past.
