Winston WT 7' 3wt
About six years ago, Winston announced that it would no longer offer WT rods on special order. I immediately searched fly shop websites across the country, and scanned their inventories. I knew there would be a rush on WT rods once the news spread, and I didn't want to miss the last opportunity to acquire a new one. A fly shop in Michigan had a WT 7’ 3wt model that I thought would be perfect for my home waters. I was fortunate to find this WT 7’ 3wt fly rod—a legacy rod from a time when rod companies valued their customers who fished the blue lines.
The sweet spot lies between ten and forty feet, and it can land a dry fly effortlessly, on target, in an ever so gentle way. I almost always select this rod over my 2wt model when it's hopper season, and I need to float a #10 parachute hopper over hungry, wild trout. Yes, it has landed a lot of trout through the last six years.

Which hopper pattern do you use? I find a #4 weight to be a better choice for hoppers.
ReplyDeleteI use a Schroeder Parachute Hopper pattern, tan and olive, in #10/12/14 sizes. A #12 size is most often the one tied on my line during late summer in my meadow streams.
