Heddon 310 Fly Reel

It's green. That's why I bought it. Twenty Dollars. These Heddon 310 reels are Hardy LRH clones that were made during the sixties through the seventies by Olympic of Japan. They don't have the quality build anywhere close to what we see in Hardy LRH reels, but did I mention they are green? And, this particular one I found is in very good condition, and about as good of a 310 model as I could hope to find. It's 3 3/16" in diameter and weighs 3.5 ounces without a fly line...a good fit with some of my 3 and 4 weight fly rods. I most likely will not fish it all that much, but I didn't really pay much of anything for it. So, why not? It's green.

The reel will be spooled up with a Gary Borger DT4F fly line, with intent to lock it into a couple of classic rods with sliding band reel seats. The NOS fly line cost me ten dollars, and has been sitting in my bookcase for a few years. Yeah, everything seems to work perfectly fine with the Heddon, and it looks right at home on a bamboo fly rod that I won in a raffle. Yup, this will be a $32 bamboo rod, reel, and fly line kit...what's not to like???

All I need to do now is find a warm day to spend on a stream and test it out, the right way...with trout. Yeah, I'm going to wait until spring...
