Creek Shots

My buddy, Neal and I were fishing today on a trout creek that flows through a canyon section before cascading on down the mountain. It holds both rainbow and brown trout, and we like fishing in the canyon area of the stream. We usually have a pretty good day of fooling trout when we visit this creek during the summer season, so we thought it would be worth a try today to see if they might still be active in this cool, fall weather.

This area is about 8500 feet in elevation, and includes a rough drive most casual anglers aren't interested in taking. But, I enjoy road trips, have 4x4, and will make the drive for an opportunity to get into a few trout.

The creek has many sections that include tight canopy, so a 7' 3wt rod is a great fit to shoot a dry fly into tight spots that look trouty. Temperature was in the mid-sixties and was just a gorgeous day to be in the outdoors. I was loving it. Were the trout active? YES! We caught a lot of them, both wild browns and rainbows. There was about a three-hour window when they were slamming my dry fly as it floated into their feeding lanes, making for a grateful day. When the canyon lost the sun, the trout stopped feeding, so we broke the gear down and made our way down the mountain. It was dusk, and the wildlife was out in the open and saying goodbye to us...life is good.

Gear: Winston WT 7' 3wt fly rod; Bauer SST3 fly reel; Winston Energy WF3F fly line; Simms sling pack; #14 Elk Hair Dry Flies all day.
