Mixed Boron Quiver
The quiver that has traveled the most miles, fished the most streams, is my Winston Boron Rod Quiver in 3, 4, and 5 weight line classifications. This carry bag has been all over the Rocky Mountains in pursuit of beautiful trout. Somehow, I put this carry bag together with no two rods coming from the same rod series? Not my usual. And, a mixed bag, you might say. And yet, they each work so effectively together in view of feel, performance, and dependability. That’s the “Winston Feel” I find in every rod I own of their’s.
Winston BIIIx 8'6" 5wt - this is a versatile rod that has fished many types of fly rigs prior to my dry fly only commitment. It has handled small streamers, double nymph rigs, and excels at throwing a single dry fly. A nice do it-all-rod for tail waters and larger freestone streams. This is the most effective 5wt or heavier rod I own in regard to protecting fine tippet and managing a trout into the net. The tip section truly helps to minimize losing trout due to head shakes, suicide runs, and break offs. I have fished this rod a lot on the San Juan River.
Winston BIII LS 8' 4wt - an 8' 4wt fly rod fits a lot of streams in the southwest. I have only used this rod with single dry flies, and it has seen many small streams that meander through open valley floors at high altitude. I rig it up for some alpine lakes I enjoy fishing too. This LS has landed more Rio Grande Cutthroat trout than any other rod I own. By that statement you know, it has seen some beautiful landscapes through the years.
Winston AIR 2 7'6" 3wt - this is a rod Winston dropped from their AIR series not long after the launch. Not because it was a bad rod, but because it was too close in performance and attributes to its sibling, the Pure 7'6" 3wt model. I'm lucky to have found one because it's a great 3wt rod on streams when there is a breezy current in the air. And, it can handle the healthy trout when most anglers would be using a 4wt weight rod. This will become a highly desired 3wt on the second-hand market one day, because of its limited production run, along with it being a boron 7'6" model...yup, no more boron on Winstons, anymore.
