Life Is Not Dull
I drove up to a couple of home waters to fish yesterday afternoon. The trout were active, but my fishing had a disruption that convinces you God does have a sense of humor.
This seemed like a vintage day, so I packed into the truck a classic 2wt rod that gets rigged up rarely and only goes on safe streams...to minimize risk of rod damage. I drove up to an area, where I can mostly fish from a bank and rarely need to step into the stream, to casts some line with this amazing classic Winston fly rod. I always have a lot of fun with this rod. It can cast a line effortlessly and accurately and when there are tight line moments, it's always a thrill.
I caught a pretty little brown trout on my first cast. When I do that, it usually makes for a very good day of fishing. After a couple of wild browns landed into my net, I was walking over to another section of the stream, and a woman approached me asking for help. She and her husband were taking a dip in the stream when some people stole their clothes, phone, wallets, and car keys from the stream's bank. They were stranded with no way to call for help. Well, there is no cell service at this location, so I drove down to the mountain village to report the incident to the police. I must admit, I wasn't exactly excited to pack up my fly gear and leave when the trout were active and hitting my dry fly.
On my way back from the village to resume fly fishing, I stopped to inform the couple that the Sheriff would be there soon to investigate and assist them. The husband walked over to the truck and added some new information to his wife's story...seems, they were skinny dipping when their belongings were stolen from the bank. He added there was an argument about them skinny dipping there. I won't go into details, but it was about then as he was talking to me through my truck's passenger window, I realized he was wearing only a t-shirt standing there. Trying not to show my surprise, I wished them luck and insured them the sheriff would be there soon to resolve their predicament.
Yeah, I drove to another steam with intentions to spend the rest of the day there. Good thing too. I was into to some healthy rainbows ranging from 10 to 12 inches that were impressive fighters on a tight line. Nope, life is not dull...at all. Oh yeah, I can confirm a Sheriff SUV was pulling into the day use area as I was leaving...so I knew I was leaving the couple with the proper authorities to help them out of a jam.

You're a good person mike helping out skinny dippers on your trout stream. That must be a first.
ReplyDeleteWell, when a girl is begging for help, what's a man to do? I probably would have had at least seven more trout, for the day, if the thieves would have left the couple's car keys on the bank. Or, maybe not...I'll never know now (LOL).
DeleteA classic story.
ReplyDeleteI just seem to walk into these stories...I'm sure when my wife meets with her friends, the conversation starts with, "guess what Mike did..."
ReplyDeleteGreat story….why does the term “skinny water” come to mind? All the best to you!
ReplyDeleteLOL...I'm sure they caused a lot of excitement for others in the area. The deepest run in the stream probably wasn't even knee deep:)
