Up A Creek
In the small creek we were fishing today, a fly fisher only needs a short 2 or 3-weight fly rod to have fun with the Leetle Fellers. It began as a beautiful day up on this mountain, and away from the daily life down in the city. Yup, it was a lazy, peaceful day of casting some dry flies for me...loved it! About the only excitement we ran into was our occasional tight lines with the indigent trout. We both brought double digits to the net. I think Neil's double nymph rig brought a couple more trout to hand, however. Whether one had a dry fly or a nymph tied on the tippet, there was lots of action.
When we took a pause to meet back at the truck for lunch, we heard some loud thunder and suddenly it become dark with storm clouds. That was a signal to break down the rods, pack them away, and put the truck in four-wheel drive to head down the mountain. It rained as we rolled slow all the way down that rocky mountain road. We took Neal's new F150, and it got its initiation, on New Mexico mountain roads, in inclement weather, and it handled it all. You can't beat an F150 truck.
I know this little creek quite well and how a 7' 3wt rod fits so perfectly. And, I was in the mood for fishing fiberglass, so I rigged up my Scott F703 with the black glass blank. It was a blast to fish this vintage glass in that beautiful area, and I loved how accurate it is with punch casts to hit a spot under overhanging branches. It is a sweet rod, I tell ya.
Gear: Scott F703 fly rod; Ross Colorado 2/3 fly reel; Winston Energy WF3F fly line; Orvis sling pack; Black Caddis dry fly.
