Three Scotts

Have you heard the one about the three Scotts who walked into a bar? Me neither. But I do have three Scotts that make an excellent quiver of rods, if you enjoy small stream fly fishing. I have never regretted taking this carry bag of Scotts into fly fishing country. These rods always deliver a fun adventure, each and every one of them!

Three rods in 7' 3wt, 7'6" 3wt, and 8' 4wt models are hard to beat for a trip into the mountains and fishing the small Rio's here. These are the all-around models in their respective lengths...from a small stream perspective, of course. The rods will handle any fishing environment you could encounter in the high altitudes within the Rocky Mountains. And, they are how I often pull together a quiver regardless of the brand.

Which specific Scott fly rods am I referring to? Well, they come from three different rod series and rod generations during Scott's history. They are a remarkable fit to each other and a joy to fish. I began a project to put together a three rod quiver of Scotts back in the Covid era when I acquired my first Scott, a GS 773 from the High Desert Angler Fly Shop in Santa Fe. They special ordered this rod for me. It's taken a few years, but I now have the ultimate Scott quiver for my personal fly fishing interests. And, each of them have a Ross Colorado fly reel to make them whole for fishing stream environments between 5,000 and 9,000 feet in elevation.

Scott F 703 - The F 703 model looks like a fly rod should and it has a reputation of being a bit faster than most glass rods back in the time. The black glass rods began around 1996 and ended with the launch of the F2 glass series in 2011.

I must admit, it's the black blank that attracted me to this classic glass rod. I'm just not a bright candy color fan which seems to be "the thing" with glass rod makers. This F703 looks like a serious fly rod. And, it fishes like a serious fly rod too.

Scott GS 773 - This 3wt graphite rod has been on many Rio's in New Mexico and Colorado. A fabulous all-around 3wt rod for small trout streams. I've written about the GS 773 before, and I believe it is the best 3wt rod, in this length, among the current 3wt rods of today. Now don't get confused, I'm saying current rods, not past classics like my Winston IM6 rods in this category (my favorite). Although this rod is right there with them.

Scott G2 804 - My gut told me this was a special rod when I saw it at a fly tackle shop. The 8' 4wt model wasn't in Scott's G2 lineup for the US market, so I thought it may be a rare one. When I began fishing it, I was impressed with its accuracy and the rod's action. This rod could put some pressure on my LS 8' 4wt for time on the trout streams. It's that good.
