Still My Favorite - TMF

There is no rod I enjoy fishing more than my Winston TMF fly rod. It just fits me. And, it also fits the small streams I frequently fish for trout. This 8' 4wt rod throws a Rio LightLine WF4F fly line with ease and helps me to confidently land a fly on intended targets. And, the aesthetics aren't too shabby either. It's easy for me to be in concert with the rhythm and flow of a stream when I'm fishing this rod, and is why it finds itself in the truck heading to a stream...often. Yup, it's still my favorite fly rod.

I typically lock in one of three fly reels into this rod, depending on mood and if I need an adjustable drag or not. The two Hardy reels are both a great fit with the LRH bringing somewhat a better balance than the Perfect model. My favorite of the three reels is the LRH, without doubt. And, when I'm fishing medium size streams with bigger trout, the Bauer SST4 is paired up with this awesome rod due to its star drag that's easy to adjust with a trout on the end of the line. Why Bauer dropped this model and not replaced it with something similar is beyond me?

    1. Thanks for the 'heads up' with the article, John. I just read it and thoroughly enjoyed Tanner's insight on trout rods. Yeah, fishing should be enjoyable and not work. His message sure resonates with me!
