Change is Good

Well, I cancelled my reservation in a campground up in northern New Mexico this week due to potential monsoons. My wife and I were planning to take two of our grandsons up for a few days of tent camping and fishing, but with monsoon season and the tragic flash floods in Ruidoso and Texas, we changed our plans. We're just not going to take a chance with the grandkids. Instead of camping, I booked a motel in my favorite little New Mexico town and we made day trips to fishing and site-seeing locations in the area.

And, instead of the Tenkara rods I was going to give them for fly fishing the Rio at the campsite we originally had reserved, I packed their Zebco rods. I knew with bait rods we could sit on the bank of a pond and watch a bobber wiggle around, despite what type of weather we may encounter.  I probably replaced much more bait on their hooks than I would with trout flies if they were fly fishing. That's okay....Sylvia and I had fun helping them on this little vacay. I do believe they really enjoyed their fishing adventure. Kyan, caught some decent-sized trout and I sighed a bit of relief when I scooped them up in the net for him.

Yup, a successful fishing trip. However, I kind of wish I had packed their fly rods, so they could have properly fished a few of the little Rios we visited. The views were great, though, and they loved playing along the streams. You know, boys, they can have fun with only a rock or a stick and can make a game out of anything. Good kiddos!

As you can see in the below photos, we stopped by a few places to gawk, play, fish, and marvel at some of New Mexico's wonders. We packed a lot into this week's little vacation. Thankfully, we didn't see much rain and there were no flash floods. A good change of plans as things turned out...yes, indeed.
