After The Rains

Today is the last day for while when I will have time for some fly fishing. So, I went to the mountains this morning to wander the trails, wade into streams, and hopefully, wrangle a few trout into the landing net. I knew the streams would not be in good condition due to the recent rains we've been having, but I needed to give it a go. While most of the streams were jacked up and very murky, I did find an area where the water was clear enough to float a dry fly. By clear enough, I mean for the trout to see my fly.

The morning was nice with cooler temperatures than we've been experiencing. And, the sky was a deep blue, sunny, and shared some cloud cover. Most of the trout I found were in the canyon section and I was able to fool many of them with my caddis dry fly. I decided today would be a lazy fishing adventure and I didn't bush whack or try to access areas that was challenging to get to...nope, I only hit the easy parts of the stream for a relaxing morning of fly fishing. Enjoyable, indeed.

Around 1:00pm the breeze stiffened and became quite cool. It happened instantly and provoked me to look up into the sky. Sure enough, there were some dark clouds beginning to blow over the area, and I decided to fish back toward the truck. With the cooler weather and some cloud cover, I found the trout were a little friskier than earlier in the morning. Lucky me.

I stopped fishing about mid afternoon, broke down the gear, and drove home with a goofy smile on my face.

Gear: Winston IM6 7'6" 3wt fly rod; Trutta Perfetta fly reel; Rio LightLine WF3F fly line; Black Caddis dry fly; Simms sling pack. Handy Pak landing net.
