Scott F703-3 Fly Rod

The black Scott F703-3 launched about thirty years ago, and was a highly regarded fly rod, particularly for its smooth action and versatility when fly fishing in small trout streams. Reviews often described it as a silky, smooth, and a fun rod suitable for a range of fly sizes and conditions. Its design and performance have earned it a place as an iconic and popular fiberglass rod, especially for those who appreciate the feel of fiberglass.

Initially, when the black F703-3 rod appeared on the market, the new action caused a bit of stir with some glass fly fishers. Yeah, it's a bit firmer and faster than both its predecessor and successor series of Scott glass rods. However, many anglers accepted this new feel and have come to covet it still after all these years. The rod was discontinued around 2010 and is still considered a prize by those who enjoy fishing glass fly rods.

Honestly, I'm scratching my head to how some anglers back then thought this rod was too firm? It will casts a line from 10 to 35 feet sweetly and effortlessly, perfect for the range I fish in my home waters. The old timers must have been accustomed to fishing noodley fly rods to think this rod was too firm. For me, the action is satisfying and just what I expect in a glass fly rod.

I like this fly rod for those days I'm in a care free mood and more interested in wandering along mountain streams to enjoy the day. It's a playful rod for fishing. This F703 casts a line easily for short casts in tight creeks and it is a blast with a trout on the line. While I can't control the line as well as I do with my  Winston WT 7' 3wt rod, I'm not concerned with high control when I'm in the mood to fish glass. To clarify, I can hit targeted pockets of water effortlessly, just not as tight as with my WT rod. It's a great rod that is a joy to fish.
