A Good Day!

I rode up to Rainy Mountain with Rich today for some fly fishing and beautiful landscapes. Several streams through the first few months of the year have not been productive at all in this mountain range. So, I was very happy to find the trout active and giving us some tight line fun today. The brown trout were all between 10 and 14 inches, healthy, and very pretty for this time of year.

We fished through the morning and into the afternoon before the winds came up and caused us to put away the gear. It was getting difficult to hit the water with a dry fly. I was aiming about six feet from the bank and letting the wind bring the fly back over to the water's surface. Yup, that was fun for a while until the trout stopped eating.

The wildlife is pretty spectacular in this big valley, and the highlight was the Elk and Bald Eagles we spotted while fishing there today. I've often see Golden Eagles when I'm there, but today was the first time I've spotted a Bald Eagle. A pair of them, actually. I'm surprised I haven't seen one before now, but I sure savored the moment as they circled the sky over the meandering Rio we were fishing. It was good day. A good day, indeed!

Gear: Winston LS 8' 4wt fly rod; Ross Colorado 4/5 fly reel; Winston Energy WF4F fly line; Simms sling pack; #14 Black Caddis all day long.
