Grand Slam of Trout

I just got back from Gila country in southern New Mexico, and let me tell you, I had the best fishing for Gila Trout I’ve ever had there! You know how sometimes you drive down and find that the Gila trout are pretty scarce? Well, this year was different! I was so thrilled with my catch.

Now that I’ve got a Gila Trout under my belt, I’ve got a new challenge for myself. I’m going to try and catch each trout species that swims in New Mexico streams and lakes. I call it the Grand Slam of Trout in New Mexico. It includes five species: Rio Grande Cutthroat, Gila, Brown, Brook, and Rainbow Trout. I’ve done it before, but it’s been a while. In fact, there was one year when I caught six trout species, including a cutbow trout. This year is the perfect time to try again!

For the next four months, I’m going to try and catch at least one new trout species each month. That way, I’ll be on my way to the Grand Slam. And let me tell you, there’s going to be a celebration in August!
