The Shape - Ergo Winston

Yeah, it's the shape that says it's a classical Morgan-Era Winston. I don't see this exact cigar shape anymore. No major rod companies craft their cork grips the same as this one...not even today's R.L. Winston company. Six inches long. Cigar with a slight modification at the rear to accommodate the pad of the angler's hand. It's art, ergonomic, and fits comfortably for a day of fishing with a light trout rod.

Why did they stop making this grip? I've had many conversations with anglers who have long-term experiences with fishing this classical grip from Winston. They ask the same thing, why is this grip not available today? Now to be clear, the new Winstons have a grip that is similar, but they are 6 1/2 inches long...very nice grip, quality cork, but not exactly the same shape as the original grip on the early Light Trout IM6 rods.

I suppose we who are lucky enough to outlive a product's life cycle must live with inevitable change. It's not as though the change has to be painful. Nope, nothing is worth obsessing about. It's just that you are not able to continue to acquire something you found was reliable and enjoyable. Yup, I guess it's time to let go and accept the new options available to us. Dang it!

  1. The great writer once wrote, if you find something you really like, buy 2 or 3 because they will either stop making it or the next version will not be as good. I subscribe to that gem of wisdom, I have purchased 2 or 3 rods that I really liked. Because? They stopped making it or the next version was not as good as the first.

    1. I certainly agree with that philosophy, John...seems I need to buy a Gene Hill book or two. I've been looking for a new series of books to read.

  3. Gene's are likely to be found on Amazon or in some libraries. I have all of them as I read his columns in Sports Afield and Field and Stream. Most of the stories are centered on fishing, hunting and dogs. Another great writer is William Tapply Jr. Son of the great Field and Stream writer Tap Tapply. All of Bills books center around flyfishing
He also is the author of great mystery books. Google them- all are terrific reads. Especially the books with names of flies as the title. Have fun.
WD Wetherell is a New England writer that published 3 fly fish books. Very entertaining reads. Available on paperback. Probably google Amazon to buy. Vermont River is his first of the trilogy. I think it was the best of the 3.He also wrote 2 books on fishing in the west and Yellowstone. Good luck.
