Trout Bum Respect

Well, we're in the new year and I decided to pay my respects to the late John Gierach and read his Trout Bum book once again. I was saddened when he passed this past year. After reading all of his fishing books, I felt as though I personally knew him, while never having met the man. This book is one of my favorites of his, so I'm delving back into a good read in view of honoring one of my favorite authors...my way of joining him in my mind's eye as I accompany John through his various fishing adventures in Colorado and elsewhere.

As I began reading the book, I knew this was a good thing to do, even though reading about fly fishing in the winter causes me some withdrawals from being able to fish my trout streams. The first chapter took me right to a small trout stream with John losing a big fish as it screamed downstream to throw his hook.

I must say the stream fishing chapters are my most enjoyable reads in his books versus the pond fishing. Nope, I'm just not a float tube kind of guy. However, his writing style and humor keeps me reading on through the night.

If you can't be on a stream yourself, why not go on a fun adventure by fly fishing with John through his story telling. No, it's not the real thing, but when immersed into John's fishing stories, it's as though you're there with him and his fishing buddies. I'll most likely re-read a couple more of John's books after I finish this one.

I'm looking forward to getting to my favorite chapter in the book...Headwaters.
