Three For The Road - WT

When I leave the house to spend a few days camping and fishing somewhere in the Southern Rockies, I usually pack three fly rods...one each in a different weight class and length. As for which rods to pack for the trip, I like to select a trio with similar personalities and action (mostly) that will work on any of the streams in the surrounding area of the camp.

There are three WT rods I like to pack into a rod carrier for one of my nomad trips through New Mexico and into Colorado, in search of different species of trout. Yes, there's a rod choice in my trifecta that will function flawlessly whether I'm fishing in a tiny high-mountain Rio, a meandering stream in a wide open meadow, or on large rivers flowing from below a dam. And, they will meet any trout challenge that arises in their designated stream.

Winston WT 7' 3wt rod with a down-locking cork reel seat. Perfect for my tiny mountain freestone streams, this 3-weight rod excels at short to medium distances when there is not stiff breeze to accommodate. Because of its short length, it can go just about anywhere a Rio takes me when I'm chasing after the Leetle Fellers. A rod with smooth progressive action, firm tip section, and loads easily for accurate placements of dry flies.

Winston WT 8' 4wt TMF rod with a custom down-locking tiger maple reel seat. Pretty much a perfect rod for a day's dance with trout when fishing a meandering small stream through a high-altitude meadow, or a medium size freestone stream. Whether there is a small trout or a large one on the end of the line, it brings a whole bunch of fun to the net. A marvelous choice of rod in small to medium streams that makes the day a memorable one!

Winston WT 8'6" 5wt rod with up-locking tiger maple reel seat. This is a WT Legacy rod that is a limited edition model, available only in 2019, as part of their 90th anniversary celebration. It can handle any size trout that lives and swims in a New Mexico stream. Like the TMF, it's an iconic Winston model that has had anglers reaching for it to fly fish the famous trout streams for over three decades. A rod that's a blast to cast dry flies to big trout, and bringing them to the net, which helped to make the WT a legendary rod series.

For a classic Winston fan, this trifecta of rods makes an extended fishing trip all kinds of fun, and ensures the adventure is a memorable one.
