Top Fly Rod - 2024

This is the time of year I start posting my year end stories. I know, we have some time left in the year, but the weather usually prevents me from fishing, hence the first year end topic of 2024. I kind of assume everyone is ready for them, anyway....because many readers aren't fishing either. So, here we go with the 'Top Fly Rod' post.

Last year the Winston WT 7' 2wt rod got the most action, but the fly rod that got out on the water most often in 2024 was my Winston TMF 8' 4wt rod. At the first of the year, I decided to fish more streams where I could rig up this TMF fly rod...more so than I had in previous years. Yeah, I thought I would change things up a bit. And, that meant fishing more in meadow streams and areas with more open stream environments. A Hardy LRH reel has proved to be the best pairing of any reel lucky enough to get locked into this Tom Morgan Favorite fly rod. It's absolutely, a fabulous rod and reel combo to go fishing in the great American outdoors.

I spooled up this Hardy LRH reel with a Rio LightLine WF4F fly line and find it a great fit with the TMF fly rod. This outfit is perfect for small to medium streams and is just as comfortable working in close as it is with medium length casts. An intuitive rod that handles a tight line with a trout better than any rod I own. I'm sure it will be in the running for 'Top Rod' in 2025 as well.

So, here's a tip of the hat to Tom Morgan's favorite fly rod...

  1. That's such a sweet 4wt fly rod. Perfectly named.

    1. Agree...it just works for small streams. I don't think Winston will ever be able to design a better one in that length and weight.
