Just Go Fish
I've been part of many debates on whether fly casting and managing a tight line with trout is all about the angler's skill...or, having the best gear available. You've probably heard the quote, "it's the indian, not the arrow." Yeah, there are numerous opinions as you can imagine. Of course an angler can catch fish with any rod he chooses for fly fishing...whether it's with a willow stick or the latest hi-tech fly rod on the market. And, some will say the older, classic fly gear is a better way to go than the new, hi-tech, fly gear. Yeah, you've heard that from me before. And, I'm still in that camp of anglers. However, those who only fish the latest high-tech gear are also very persistent advocates of the "newer is better" mantra. Well, acquiring a brand new fly rod is pretty exciting, I'll grant you that. But better?
Common sense would suggest fishers use the type of gear they prefer and enjoy, regardless of what anyone says. Once one accepts that concept, there's no reason for debate among friends regarding fly gear. And yeah, continuing to develop our fly fishing skills certainly can be rewarding. That's a no brainer. But, for me, the most important thing is being in the outdoors and having fun fishing your favorite gear, in those beautiful trout streams we love to explore!
Just go fish...everything will be fine. Unless you keep getting wind knots (LOL).
