On The Tailgate

One of the joys in this old man's life is rigging up a fly rod on the tailgate of my F150 truck. Yup, parked by a trout stream, listening to the rush of the water, and wondering if the trout will be rising this day to my dry fly. Talk about anticipation. It's an exciting feeling knowing that soon I'll be wading into the stream and casting a dry fly to a promising looking spot...for a quick take.

Yeah, I've heard some guys say if they catch a trout on their first cast, it's an omen for a bad day of fishing...meaning, they will not be having too many tight lines. Or as they say, "a slow day." Fortunately, I've found the opposite to be true for me. Catching trout right from the beginning tends to be a sign I'll have a great day with lots of active trout taking my dry fly and landing in my net.

Attached are a few random photos of classic creek rods being rigged up on the F150's tailgate. Nope, I don't remember any of these days being a bad day on the stream, just good times in the outdoors, on a mountain with trout. Yup, life is good.

  1. John, rods start seeing some wear this time of year, but once we get snow and fishing is done, I'll have a cleaning day on the grips...and put away the rods for winter. Of note, I use that rug mat for gearing up and changing in and out of my wading boots as well. It gets lots of use, including door mat at the tent's front door.

  2. Yes, I have found many uses for rug mats etc. I use one of my old neoprene waders to cover my seats when I enter the vehicle wet from wading. Question, what do you use to clean your cork? I use Mr. Clean wipes to get the grime off. Thanks for sharing all of your pics and blog.

  3. You remind me, need to look for seat cover solution. John, I use Dawn dishwashing soap, warm water, and lightly rub the grip clean with dish cloth, then rinse with cold water...left to dry before putting it back in the tube.

  4. I just picked up a set of saddlebag seat covers from the big W mart store for 35 bucks. Well made. In fact I have another set that have survived 4 vehicles. I put the new ones on and covered them with my old ones. My wife also has a set on her CRV. They do hold up from abuse.
