Glass Retro

This is a very cool fly rod…the Winston Glass Retro 6’6” 3wt fly rod. I was in the mood to fish some glass today and took it for a slow, relaxing day on the trout streams. My wife gave me this rod and reel kit as an anniversary present and as such, only goes out on what I call "Sunday Drives" in the most accident free streams. Yeah, I know. Today is not Sunday. That's just a metaphor from the old days when families would go out for Sunday drives to relax and see the country side. The Glass Retro rod series was sold for only two years in 2002 and 2003...mine is a bit special because it has the factory option of cork and sliding band reel seat. Not many of these seen in trout streams anymore.

The reel is a Tibor Spring Creek that was loaded with a Rio LightLine WF3F line, from the fly shop as part of the reel purchase. Why Tibor stopped selling these reels is beyond me? Used Spring Creek reels are now selling for twice the retail price of the new reels being sold back in the day. Yeah, I'm hanging on to mine...it's that good!

I watched a video interview the other day with two Winston employees responsible for rod design and sales/marketing. When the interviewer asked the rod designer if Winston has plans to bring back a fiberglass fly rod, he quickly said he could not talk about that. Hmmm, that response caused me to wonder if there is such a rod in the pipeline...that would very cool.

    1. You know, I used to read his blog on a regular basis. For some reason I stopped a few years ago. I'll put him back on my reading list. Thanks!
