Half Days Only

I've decided I should only fish in the early morning hours for the time being. The heat is beginning to affect the little wild browns I enjoy bringing into my net. So, it's going to be half days only for fishing until the temperatures begin to get cooler. Nope, it's not about me only wanting to fish in the coolness of the mornings, it truly is about the trout and doing what's best for them.

After spending a week in Austin to see the new granddaughter, my wife and I returned to Albuquerque, got some rest, and then took our youngest grandson fishing up on Rainy Mountain. It was time for him to try out his new waders and Tenkara fly rod with his Papa and Grandma. This was his first try at fly fishing and I was amazed...he's a natural fly fisher. The day before we took the kid fishing, Papa checked out the fishing spots to determine best stream areas for him. Yup, I found a great spot for him to fish and all of us to have a picnic up on what he calls Papa's Fishing Mountain. And yes, Papa also drifted a fly...a little bit.

Kolton's Gear: Tiny Tenkara 4'11" rod; 7'6" 5x leader; #16 Parachute Adams. Yup, the dry fly is barbless...just in case he stuck himself (didn't happen).

Papa's Gear: Winston BIIt 7'6" 3wt fly rod; Ross Colorado 2/3 fly reel; Winston Energy WF3F fly line; #12 Black Caddis; Simms sling pack; Brodin net.

  1. Your grandson looks like a tenkara pro. I guess the warm rains and high overnight lows has raised the water temps on the mtn. We usually get a cold storm come in right before sept. The cold sends the white wing dove to mexico just before opening day hunt sept 1st in southern az.

    1. That Tenkara is just 4'11" long...pretty much perfect for a 5yr old to learn fly fishing. He is an intuitive fisher and knew likely holding spots without me teaching him. That rod was a good buy for him and he had a blast.

Hopefully, you can get into some holdover birds come opening season. Our monsoons seem to be going on forever here in NM. Homewaters are tea stained while some rivers further north are raging from the down pours. Checking stream flows is a definite must before going on a fishing trip.

You and Judy need to come over this fall...fishing should be good then.

    3. That's great - Colors should be changing then...and trout hitting on a dry fly!
