2-Piece Winston Creek Rods

A classic quiver of three creek rods thrown into the back seat of the truck is a clue I'm about to leave the driveway for some mountain streams. And, when they are two-piece classic Winstons, well, it means there will be some fun 'trouty' encounters on a few little Rios throughout the day. There's just something about a 2-piece rod that works so nicely in fly fishing.

You know, with short creek rods, it's easy to travel and fish with two-piece rods on the various mountain Rios I call home waters. I use a cordura rod tube that can hold three rods up to 7'6" in length...very handy for taking a quiver to the mountain. And, once there, a two-piece rod is a simple and easy job to rig up in ready to cast a fly. Anything from 6'6" rods up to 8' fly rods will work in their designated streams throughout New Mexico.

This year, my 2-pc Winston preferences are:

  • IM6 6'6" 2wt
  • WT 7' 4wt
  • IM6 7'6" 3wt and 4wt
  • IM6 8' 4wt
  • WT TMF 8' 4wt

  1. I buy vintage glass and graphite- it is so much easier to find 2 piece vintage instead of 4. I have made it a goal to find the 2 piece I want and then search for the 4 piece "sister" version. Kind of a fun hobby. Yesterday I fished the 4 piece Fenwick glass voyageur version of the 7 1/2 6 weight. A 16 inch largemouth had it bent to the cork. So much fun. Thanks for the postings.

    1. For some reason, few people want a two-piece rod...and, they're missing out on some sweet rods. The longer tip section on a two-piece makes for a nice action that can be felt and is different from its multi-piece sibling. My IM6 two and three piece 7'6" 3wt rods are different rods with different actions that's quite noticeable.

Congrats on that big bass you caught...whewww!

    2. True, 4 piece is easy for travel and for hiding. 2 piece better for rod action.
If not concerned about travel or hiding, I agree, 2 piece is the way to go. I don't think the current manufacturers even offer 2 piece anymore.
As far as that bass goes, a nice fish but the pond I was fishing was private and is loaded with them.

    3. The only two piece rod I can think of that is still being sold is the Winston TMF.
