A throwback to the late 1990's when the R.L. Winston Company was approaching their 70th anniversary, and the managers began sharing ideas with each other about how best to make 1999 a memorable year. One of the ideas discussed caused quite a bit of excitement and energy among the employees. "What if we partnered with Hardy Reels to make our version of a 'Winston Perfect Reel' in a deep green finish?" It's not surprising the idea of a Winston Perfect Reel caused such a buzz in Twin Bridges, since the Hardy Perfect Reel was a favorite among many who worked there....yep, the idea eventually became a reality, and the reels were featured in their 1999, 2000, and 2001 catalogs. I prefer to pair this reel with my IM6 fly rods since the reel was launched alongside the IM6 rod series in 1999.
My Winston Perfect 2 7/8" reel has Winston Energy WF2 and WF3 lines spooled up for use on the tiny mountain Rios flowing throughout Rainy Mountain. The reel is primarily used on an IM6 6'6" 2wt rod, however, the extra spool allows for the reel to be used on an IM6 7'6" 3wt rod as well. I'm thinking this rod and reel pairing is pretty much special!
