Scott STS 9' 5wt Fly Rod

My neighbor and fishing buddy gifted this rod to me about a year ago. I thought the rod might be a special model from the Scott Rod company, but didn't actually know anything about it's history or what kind of reviews it received from anglers through the years. So, I went for some information on the internet and fly fishing sites to see what I could find about this rod.

The STS rod series was introduced in 1996 as Scott's first rods having a fast action with power for big trout in big rivers. STS was Jim Bartschi's (Scott's rod designer) first Scott rod launch into the fast rod catagory, separating it from their more moderate action  G series of rods. The new STS found success as did it's successors with sanded flat grey blanks and medium fast action tapers. Anglers found them very pleasant to fish and can they still be found in trout streams with today's Scott fans.

Here's what Scott had to say about the STS rod series in their 1996 catalog:

“New fibers and resin systems provide STS with the strength to handle the toughest conditions and muscle to suit the demands of powerful casters. They are sanded very lightly in our new machinery and are given a satin wax finish for protection. With black guides and fittings, STS rods present a stealthy, minimally reflective finish”
