The Last Ranger - Peter Heller
New and on the bookshelves now, Peter Heller has written another fabulous book. The Last Ranger. The main character is Ren, who has landed his dream job as an enforcement ranger in Yellowstone National Park. Ren is investigating an ongoing problem with someone trapping and shooting wolves in the YNP, along with some subplots that intersect with his investigation. He started this job after the death of his wife, in Colorado, and found a new family within a small cadre of YNP colleagues. The other prime character is a biologist of renown who is researching the wolf packs in the park and is distressed about the ongoing poaching of her beloved wolves. Ren's investigation in both the park and surrounding communities is a thrilling read.
My brother and I spent a week in YNP and pitched a tent in Pebble Creek Campground that plays a part in this story. Ren's territory included all the streams in the valley where Robert and I camped and fished during that adventure of ours...Lamar River, Soda Butte Creek, and Slough Creek. As his investigation moved through the area in this suspenseful story, I could see in my mind's eye all of those places...which made this book even more compelling.
