The Galvan Standard

In 1990, after fishing his home waters at a tributary called Clavey River, Boni Galvan went into a fly shop to purchase a new reel, only to find he could not afford one. So, he began to design a reel of his own...a light, rugged reel with an exceptionally smooth, dependable drag system at an affordable price.

Using his machinist’s skills and trout fisherman’s intuition, Boni created the first prototype in 1992. This first reel evolved through several configurations until the summer of 1994 when it went on the market for retail sales. The finished product was one of the lightest, smoothest, simplest and most elegant reels available in its day.

The first Galvan reel made were The Standard 2.5 and 2.7 reels. Yes, Boni does all of the design work and the reels are 100% made in USA....and, the company is still family owned and operated.

Standard reels are machined from bar-stock aluminum, anodized to a semi-gloss black finish, with a quick release spool. These Galvan reels are fully ventilated for light weight, with silent retrieve and a soft outgoing click. I have fishing buddies who will only lock a Galvan reel into their rod, and it's not hard to understand why.

  1. Great info on the galvan history. I like their fly reels, too. I have 2 standard models and 5 others. All top quality.

    1. My neighbor, Brian gifted those to me...very generous of him and I do appreciate it much. I always liked these classic Standards ever since I saw you fishing with them during our first meeting on the San Juan. Great reels!
