Hardy Perfect Reel - A True Classic

The Hardy Perfect is most likely the most famous reel ever made. It has been in production longer than any reel on the market today, and is the flagship of Hardy that defines the brand. It was Forster Hardy, who came up with the idea of this reel in 1890, with detachable spool, ball bearings, and adjustable drag. For the next hundred years, only limited changes were made to his original design.

Initially, the reel was built only for salmon fishermen, but in 1895 Hardy began offering four sizes of trout models, known as “contracted” Perfects, because the trout reels had a much narrower spool than the original salmon reels. These trout Perfects were built entirely out of aluminm, which was quite innovative since aluminum was a new thing back in those days. The Perfect reel was built right up until 1995 and was the longest running reel in Hardy's catalog. The story might have ended then, but Hardy's customers wanted the reel back in production. And, we're fortunate Hardy responded by continuing to make these iconic reels. The current model of reels are CNC milled, available in both left and right hand wind. And, if you would like to own a classic reel...well, the Perfect reel has quite the historical pedigree.
