Winston IM6 Trout Rods

The IM6  series of rods are one of Winston's most popular fly rods ever designed for trout fishing. They have a progressive taper, soft tip, and the "Winston Action." These smooth casting rods are ideal for delicate presentations to spooky trout while using light tippets and are designed to cast specific distances. Many anglers still fish with these classic rods, including me, because they are still a great rod after all these years.

My first IM6 rod is a custom made 7'6" 3wt rod with Winston's IM6 blank in a three-piece configuration. The blank was purchased in 1997 directly from R.L. Winston and the rod was built by a well known maker from back East. I recently had Ben of Flat Creek Rods replace the reel seat and refresh the handle that brings the rod more in alignment with factory builds. It has Ti-Gold snake guides, Ti-Gold tip top and Ti-Gold framed ceramic stripping guide, dark green wraps, with the rod model inked in gold on the shaft.

This is one of the smoothest rods I fish and although it was built for the small streams and small trout I like to fish, I have brought some big, heavy trout to the net with this rod. It's a rod design that is so good it transcends the decades of time...I think that makes the IM6 a true classic and a rod Winston fans cherish having in their collection!

Post Note: Since this posting, I have added two factory built IM6 rods....a 6'6" 2wt and a 7'6" 3wt with identical components and in two-piece configuration. They each have been featured in posts on the blog.
