I like skinny rod tubes (1 5/8") because it usually means there is an older classic fly rod sitting comfortably inside. Winston's older fly rods came wrapped in these skinny tubes and had a variety of labels and screw-on caps to describe the goodness it was protecting within. Photo above shows a sampling of aluminum tubes with labels that have evolved through the later times in Winston's history (carbon tubes not included). And, as you noticed, no San Francisco era tubes...darn it!
I don't know the exact timeline for each change of label, but have a general idea...be nice if there was a way to verify such. The tube color and caps also have variations through the years.
Yeah, you'd have to be a fly rod nut to appreciate rod tube labels:)
