Fishing the Slam (day 2)

My hopes of netting two targeted trout species became a reality during this two-day fishing trip with Rich this week. I was able to put in the net a rio grande cutthroat and brook trout which gave me four species of trout!!! But best of all, getting those two species this second day means I now have the New Mexico Slam in the bag. For those of you who don't know what our slam is, it's netting all five trout species that reside in New Mexico within the calendar year: Gila Trout; Rio Grande Cutthroat; Brown Trout; Brook Trout; and Rainbow Trout.

To enhance our chances of getting into some brook trout, we spent the day up at an alpine lake known for brook trout. The lake also has rio grande cutthroats, but I didn't have any expectations of netting one because recent articles I've read only mentioned anglers catching brook trout there.  And, Rich and I certainly netted some brookies. I only got one that was about 11 inches and absolutely beautiful but the photo I took turned out lousy (I don't know what I did wrong). Rich nabbed several brook trout that looked awesome.

My biggest surprise of the week is that I ended up with several Rio Grande Cutts which I really didn't expect to get on this trip. I truly thought we would only be into the brook trout at this lake but, lucky for me, those RGC's got me to the completion of my quest for the New Mexico Slam.

  1. Excellent. Glad you got your slam. That lake looks remote.
