Finishing the Slam (day 1)
I planned this trip up north with the hope I might complete the New Mexico slam with a secondary goal to net four trout species during the trip. Sitting in camp typing this post, I can say I’m off to a good start.
I stopped at a pretty little Rio on my way up to camp to meet Rich and had a couple of hours of tramping through the stream in search of brown trout. The stream was up a bit due to the monsoons but I drifted a stimulator under a cutbank and got my first trout of the trip.
Soon after I got to camp, Rich and I headed off to another stream in search of more trout. Just a beautiful day and it felt great to be in the mountains and the outdoors! We got into some rainbow trout and now I have two species and feeling really good…
Below are some random photos of our first day of fishing. Now if only I can get the other two species tomorrow…we’ll see.
Gear: Winston WT 7’ 3wt and BIII LS 8’ 4wt fly rods; Bauer SST3 and SST4 fly reels.
Flies: #14, #16 orange stimulator; #16 elk hair caddis, #14 parachute adams, #14 black royal wulff.
Lucky dawg. Now go get that brookie and cutt.
