Winston Legacy Rods - BIIt and WT
Winston introduced a series of rods back in 2019 to commemorate their 90th Anniversary of building fly rods. The series included four of their most revered models and were hand-inscribed as special edition models built to original specifications - including ferrule style, material and action. The historic Winston Trophy label and unique nickel silver reel seat completed their definitive look.
As part of a marketing campaign, emails and social media posts went out from Winston on May 9th, 2019 that the Legacy rods could be placed on order with authorized Winston dealers and would only be accepted through July 1, 2019. I have to say, that email was one of the more exciting emails I've received from them. I mean, these are "the" rod models to have in your quiver. Winston built 215 of these special edition rods and they will surely become a classic to be collected by anglers world wide.
Boron IIt 8'6" 4wt - The first Winston to incorporate higher modulus graphite with a light application of Boron composite into Winston's light line trout tapers, achieved a biblical reputation among dry fly enthusiasts.
The most distinguished rod in the Boron IIt series was the famous 8'6" 4 weight. The rod was so highly regarded, that it was dubbed "The Staff of Moses". To its fans, The Staff of Moses, displayed an uncanny ability to present the smallest of flies, on the lightest of tippet, and land surprisingly large trout.
WT 8'6" 5wt - When Winston first began working with graphite material in 1975, the 5-weight rod has been a key rod for the company, as it is smooth enough for delicate dry fly presentations, yet powerful enough for wind, nymphing, and small streamers. The most popular of all the Winston WT 5-weight models was the 8'6" 5 weight.
This configuration was so balanced and smooth, that Joan Wulff chose this rod as her favorite. It's delicate enough for the lightest of tippet, yet crisp and accurate to maintain line control at distances up to 60 feet. It's light, lively, and fun to fish.
If someone had to own one trout rod, the WT 8'6" 5 weight would be tough to top.
My two favorite series of Winston rods of all time are the WT and BIIt rods. Which one do I like best? Answer, "The one in my hand, while standing in a mountain stream, drifting a fly towards the nose of a trout."
Very nice fly rods. Especially your custom ordered legacy. I see winston came out with a do all fly rod for 2021, the Air 2.
ReplyDeleteThanks. I haven't seen anything about Air 2 yet. Thought something was up when seeing big discounts on Air models. At the price of new rods these days, think I'll just enjoy what I have.
DeleteThe Air 2 is pricey. My Sage Trout LL went up a hundred bucks. Glad I bought it when I did. Wish I had bought two.
DeleteHave you seen the selling prices for used rods on Ebay? Crazy high. There must be a significant increase in newbies starting to fly fish and driving up new and used rod prices in the market.
