Salvatore "Sal" Giglio

There's something about Taos, New Mexico and the art community there that I love! Maybe it's because I once worked as an illustrator and art manager for a short time after getting my degree in commercial art/advertising. It's a place that surely fulfills some kind of need within me and why I always look forward to my regular trips there...roaming the plaza, the galleries, and sometimes a little party in the bars and restaurants. Sylvia always treats me to three days at the La Fonda on the Plaza (same time each year) and we wouldn't miss that weekend for anything. It's a special event for us.

Just after I moved to New Mexico about eighteen years ago, I made a point to visit Taos and explore the art galleries. I met a man working in the Sage Fine Art Gallery and I remember as soon as I stepped into the door we engaged in a conversation. I learned he owned a graphics art company in New York City before retiring and moving out to Taos. His artwork that was hanging in the gallery was impressive, indeed. I can still see those works of art in my mind's eye. Yes, I bought one of Sal's paintings that day...still hanging on my studio wall at home. I think through the years I have acquired about four or five of his works and they are hanging in various rooms at our house.

Sal is no longer with us. He passed in 2019 and I have missed seeing him at the gallery. Every time I walk through our house where one of his paintings hang on the wall, I think of that first time I met him.

It's getting time for another trip to Taos...

  1. Glad you have some good memories of sal hanging on the wall. Judy loves taos. On a sided note you would love judy's son noah's graphic art hanging on our walls. Some really cool drawings. His graphic arts business included reggae cd's, 3d art, and just boxes of amazing art and sketches of living in ny city. He made sketches of skinheads waiting in line to get in cbgb's, birthplace of punk. There's a three foot drawing of noah's commute from home to work on a ny city bus. It all just flows together.
